Seemed Too Good To Be True {Dried Strawberries Fiasco}

and it was.

I've withstood the urge to buy a dehydrator over the years because I just couldn't bear to own one more appliance.... and now I may break down.  But before I got to this point, I saw a pin {click "pin" to see it} I thought, AWESOME, dried strawberries WITHOUT a dehydrator, this is TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE.

Well, it was. And I post this to save you a couple pints of strawberries & a few hours of your time.

Here's the recipe:
strawberries
salt & pepper
Set oven to 100F, halve or quarter the strawberries, depending on their size; place on a baking sheet; season with salt and pepper.  BAM! not.
 Can you say YUCK?

I even left them in longer and longer hoping they would change.... I'd love to hear if anyone sees where I went wrong.... I'd love to NOT buy a dehydrator.

  1. Mine wound up the same way. They never became dry enough. And they didn't even taste good. I was so disappointed. It truly was a fiasco.

  2. I have seen dried strawberries before called strawberry chips - a big tip the writer says was to cut the strawberries very thin
You are so brave to try this my friend! I would not even attempt ;)

  3. Oh no! I've never tried to dehydrate anything in my oven, but a dehydrator is one of those things on my maybe some day list :-)

  4. Thanks for the warning. It's so frustrating to try a new idea or recipe and have it fail. It's nice to have a reliable source tell you the truth!

  5. All recipes should be tested 2 or 3 times before it is publish. Sorry this didn't work out for you.

  7. Did you contact the original author for clarification? Sometimes people leave steps out without realizing that they forgot to jot something down.

    1. how rational of you to suggest that! But alas, no, I did not, I was too annoyed.... the original "recipe" is so lame in hindsight I am not going to bother at this point but you are right, I'm bitchy and should've given them a chance :)

  8. The recipe actually calls for 100 degrees celcius. I think it's 220 degrees fahrenheit. May be where you went wrong???

  9. Actually, they've apparently updated it! And so yes, that would be where "I" went wrong LOL but the recipe when I printed it said 100F.... I will have to be fair and retry!

  10. I am currently trying it at the correct temperature, and it's not working either. Boo.

  11. Soooo... I started the dehydration process as noted in that exact same pin. Then I came across your post here. Wish I had read it first. I think the oven needs to be at a lower temp. It takes longer than 4 hrs. & maybe use something that allows the juices to drip. The strawberry needs air circulation from all sides. i don't have a metal cooling rack, maybe that would help. And a lot more time & patience. I gave in a barrowed a neighbors dehydrator. Thanks for the forum.
